Common Errors

The issues reported most often, what causes them, and how to fix each one.

The Startup Check Failed#

Cause: something the resource needs is missing or misconfigured.

Solution: a healthy install prints nothing. The resource only speaks up when a check fails, and the line tells you exactly what to fix.

Clients Crash When I Restart The Resource#

Cause: qs-tattoo-preview was stopped or restarted.

Solution: never stop or restart it. Stopping the resource that owns a PED_OVERLAY_FILE unmounts that decoration collection, and a ped still wearing one of its decorations faults the game client on the next decoration native.

That is exactly why it is a separate resource — restarting qs-tattoo-creator is always safe, restarting the preview is not.

Tattoos Fade Minutes After Being Applied#

Cause: the appearance script cleared the decorations and nothing put them back.

Solution: check your appearance integration:

qs-appearance works out of the box — it fires its event after every clear it makes.
illenium-appearance needs Config.RCoreTattoosCompatibility = true in illenium's own config, not in ours. Without that signal, a hair change inside its menu is only caught by the watchdog a few seconds later.

Tattoos Disappear After reloadskin#

Cause: this shouldn't happen — a plain reloadskin is always followed by a cleared rebuild of ours.

Solution: if they really don't come back, your appearance script was not detected. Check the detection list, and with two installed at once set Config.AppearancePin so there is no ambiguity.

The Appearance Menu Blinks Or Loses My Tattoo#

Cause: it shouldn't — your own ped is never rebuilt on a timer.

Solution: our decorations go straight back on top of whatever the appearance script applies, driven by its own announcement rather than a poll. If the menu blinks, the integration is missing — see the two points above.

The Studio Doesn't Open At A Shop#

Cause: something in the studio setup is incomplete.

Solution: run /tattoo_shop. It prints one line per studio — chairs, staff on shift, till, supplies — and what is stopping it working.

Remember: the area is the studio. Nothing exists outside it, so a shop with no area drawn has no NPC, no chair and no management point.

Nobody Can Tattoo#

Cause: being an artist is not a framework job.

Solution: there is no job and no society account anywhere in this. An artist must be on the studio's staff list with the canTattoo permission, and clocked in — /tattoo_duty, or the button in the management menu.

The Studio Can't Work Even Though Staff Are On Shift#

Cause: the studio ran out of supplies.

Solution: every tattoo uses ink, needles and gloves. Order more from Management → Supplies. This is intentional — a studio that runs out cannot work until someone restocks it.

An Employee Sees A Tab They Shouldn't#

Cause: their rank has that permission.

Solution: adjust it in Management → Ranks, where the 13 permissions are ticked one by one. Note that a tab a rank cannot see is never sent to that client in the first place — so if they can see it, the permission is genuinely granted.

A Design Lands In The Wrong Place#

Cause: the body part's landing spot needs tuning for your server.

Solution: open /tattoo_calibrate. The cyan ring is where a design lands right now, from where you are standing — click the map, or press use its spot after dragging a real design into place.

Do not do maths in the config. The panel stores the spot and the angle it was measured at together, which is what stops the panel and the studio drifting apart.

Dragging Feels Inverted#

Cause: the drag axis for that body part is flipped.

Solution: /tattoo_calibrate → flip the axis, and adjust the drag speed while you are there. Changes apply immediately; Save writes custom/placement.lua.

My Calibration Was Lost On Update#

Cause: it shouldn't be — custom/placement.lua is in escrow_ignore.

Solution: config/, custom/ and locales/ stay yours across updates. If the file is gone, it was deleted by hand — it is safe to delete and safe to keep, loaded on top of the defaults.

My Settings Were Overwritten By An Update#

Cause: they weren't — settings live in the database.

Solution: qs_tattoo_settings stores one row per value you actually changed, so an update never overwrites your tuning. Reset in the panel puts a section back to what the resource ships with.

A Setting Did Nothing Until I Restarted#

Cause: it is one of the few that genuinely cannot apply live.

Solution: those are marked "needs a restart" in the panel — a chat command is registered once at start, and a body part's texture size is what the collection was built at. Everything else applies the moment you save, to the server and to every player online.

Clothing Items Appear Or Vanish When Someone Is Tattooed#

Cause: your inventory synced clothing off a stripped ped.

Solution: a tattoo menu poses the ped and bares the body part it works on, so an inventory that syncs clothing has to stand down while one is open.

qs-inventory is auto-detected and switched automatically. For your own, copy client/custom/inventory/standalone.lua, point it at your export, and add the resource to the inventories list.

An AI Generation Returns 429 Forever#

Cause: the provider's free tier gives image models a quota of 0.

Solution: gemini and openai need a key with billing enabled. pollinations needs no key at all. Set a Fallback for when a provider runs dry.

A Player Can't Paste An Image URL#

Cause: the host is not on the allow-list.

Solution: add it in custom/config.lua, or allow any host. Note that links into your own machine or LAN stay blocked either way, and an animated GIF contributes its first frame — a ped decoration is a still texture.

A Panel Is Blank Instead Of Loading#

Cause: a payload failed validation.

Solution: the NUI is validated, not trusted. A mismatch throws a typed error and prints one line naming the event and the field, which FiveM forwards to F8 — so check there. A broken payload is a message rather than a blank panel.

Missing Texts In The Interface#

Cause: your locale file is incomplete or outdated after an update.

Solution: missing keys fall back to English, so this is a warning, not a failure. Copy the missing key from the English locale — including the labels in the Settings panel, which live in the same files.

I Deleted qs-tattoo-data#

Cause: it looked like leftover clutter next to the fresh resource. It is not.

Solution: there is nothing to recover. It held every tattoo your players were wearing, every AI picture and your exported catalog, and it is not part of the download.

Going forward: when updating, replace qs-tattoo-creator and qs-tattoo-preview only, and back up qs-tattoo-data together with your database.
